Port of Call: Samana, Dominican Republic

Cayo Levantado in Samana Dominican Republic had the best beach out of our other port of calls (St Thomas, St. Maarten, San Juan PR) in the Norwegian Gem Ship. We paid for an excursion (Adult: $14, Child: $9) that took you to Cayo Levantado. You basically paid for the water taxi. It was worth it because we had the option to relax on the beautiful white sand beach, play a game of volleyball,  dance, and shop (locally made art, crafts and souvenirs). There were Kayaks, pedal boats, sun floats and snorkeling equipment available for rent.

We booked the 10:00 a.m. (everything before that was already book and we booked 2 days in advance) water taxi and by the time we arrived in the island there were barely any lounge chairs left (They are first come first serve). We got lucky and found two lounge chairs that were falling apart. You should book this excursion as early as possible as there is really nothing else to do in Samana except take a water Taxi into downtown.  Next time we would book an earlier time to make sure we get a good spot on the beach and better lounge chairs. There were aggressive vendors but since we know how to deal with them we didn’t mind and was even able to get a good deal on our Samana souvenir.

Papa Jay used his GoPro camera during this vacation. If your interested in seeing our vacation video including clips of Samana, Dominican Republic click on this link  http://www.babytravelblog.com/cameras-video/ and view the video under GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition.

FYI – locals also frequent this island and have a habit of staring uncomfortably at the tourists, not sure how you may feel about this but figured I’d inform you. We didn’t mind. Overall enjoyed our stay at Cayo Levando especially for the price of this excursion.

Getting off the Norwegian Gem Ship into the water taxi. It was taking us to Cayo Levantado in Samana Dominican Republic.

We made it to the water Taxi with my Juliana. I had to feed her a snack in order for her to stay still. She sure does love to eat … Takes after daddy lol

The vendors in Cayo Levantado Samana Market were pretty aggressive but you can haggle with them.  I always go half of what the price is and end up paying only a little more than half. If you need any tips on how to deal with aggressive vendors click on the link below.

Papa Jay found Juliana a sand dollar…She was amazed by it :-)

The food was about 6 dollars a plate which included a choice of meat and fries. We enjoyed the bbq ribs and hot dogs with fries.

The Coco Loco drinks were very popular in Cayo Levantado

They had the alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks station on the right and the Coco Loco station on the left.

Beautiful Cayo Levantado Island… to the right there was a volleyball game that was going on while we were there to enjoy
